About buying crypto with PIX
PIX is the instant payment system run by the Central Bank of Brazil. It moves reais between Brazilian accounts in seconds, at any hour of any day, including weekends and holidays, and it is built into existing banking apps rather than being a separate app. By the mid-2020s it had passed 150 million users, and it has become the default way Brazilians pay each other and pay businesses.
Paying a crypto exchange with PIX means pushing reais from your own bank app to the exchange. You need a Brazilian account and a CPF, and you confirm the payment inside your own app, so there are no card details to share. Payments are final, so there is no chargeback if you change your mind.
The list at the top of this page shows the exchanges that accept PIX.
PIX history
PIX is created and operated by the Banco Central do Brasil, the country’s central bank. Research into an instant-payment system for Brazil began around 2016 under then Central Bank President Ilan Goldfajn, and the project was formally approved in May 2018. Key registration, which lets users link a PIX key to their account, opened in October 2020, and the full public launch took place on 16 November 2020.
From day one the Central Bank required every bank and fintech with more than 500,000 accounts to build PIX into their apps, which drove fast adoption. By the mid-2020s the system had passed 150 million users.
PIX and crypto
PIX is a payment scheme operated by a central bank, not a commercial company. It doesn’t offer any crypto product of its own: you can’t buy or hold crypto inside PIX, because there’s no PIX app to hold anything in. The Central Bank’s role is limited to running the rails and setting the scheme rules.
It also publishes no policy for or against paying crypto exchanges. PIX simply moves reais between Brazilian accounts. Whether you can use it to fund a crypto account depends on the exchange offering it as a deposit method, not on anything PIX itself decides.
How to buy crypto with PIX
The steps are the same at any exchange that accepts PIX.
- Pick an exchange. Choose one from the list at the top of this page that accepts PIX.
- Verify your account. Complete identity verification, which normally requires your CPF to match the account you’ll pay from.
- Choose PIX. On the deposit or buy screen, select BRL and choose PIX, then enter the amount.
- Pay from your own account. Open your banking app, scan the QR code or paste the key, and check the amount and recipient name before confirming.
- Buy your crypto. Once the balance appears, usually within seconds, use it to buy the coin you want.
Can you buy crypto instantly with PIX?
A PIX payment usually reaches an exchange account within seconds, at any hour of any day, since settlement runs through the Central Bank’s ledger around the clock. Because the rail is always on, weekends and holidays don’t slow it down the way a bank transfer might.
What can add delay is at the exchange’s end: a first deposit may face extra checks before the balance is released, and a payment that fails verification can be held. If the balance hasn’t appeared within a few minutes, keep the receipt and its end-to-end identifier for support.
Fees when buying crypto with PIX
PIX is free for individuals, so the scheme itself charges nothing for a personal payment. Any cost you see comes from the exchange, not from PIX.
An exchange may add a deposit fee, or build a wider margin into an instant buy so the price you pay sits above the market rate. Where the reais land matters too: an exchange that holds a real BRL balance you can trade from is often cheaper in practice than one that converts straight away at its own rate. Check the total shown on the confirmation screen before you commit, not just the deposit fee.
Keys, QR codes and limits
If a venue gives you a static key rather than a QR code, treat it like a bank reference: the deposit still has to be identified, so follow whatever instruction the venue gives about entering an identifier. A dynamic QR avoids this entirely, which is why most venues prefer it.
Limits are set by your bank within a framework the central bank defines, and the one that surprises people is the night-time cap. Between 20:00 and 06:00 most banks apply a substantially lower ceiling by default. You can request a higher limit through your bank, but the change takes effect after a waiting period rather than immediately.
The CPF on the paying account should match the CPF on the exchange account. A PIX from a third party is a third-party deposit, and venues treat it the same way they treat one on any other rail.
How to choose an exchange that accepts PIX
Compare a few things between the exchanges that accept PIX. Look at the total cost shown before you confirm, not just the deposit fee, and whether the exchange holds a genuine BRL balance or converts immediately at its own rate. Check how long verification takes, whether you can withdraw back to PIX, which coins you can buy, and the exchange’s security record. The list at the top of this page shows which exchanges accept PIX.
PIX pros and cons
What we like
- Settles in seconds, 24 hours a day, every day of the year including holidays.
- Free for individuals, so the scheme charges nothing for a personal payment.
- QR codes and copy-paste keys carry the deposit identifier, so there is no reference to mistype.
- Held by essentially every Brazilian account holder, so nothing extra needs setting up.
What holds it back
- Brazil and reais only; it does not reach accounts abroad.
- Requires a Brazilian bank account and a CPF or CNPJ.
- Night-time transaction limits apply by default at most banks.
- Payments are final, and the Central Bank’s fraud-return route is narrow.
PIX FAQ
Yes. The CPF on the paying account should match the one on your exchange account. A payment from someone else is treated as a third-party deposit.
PIX supports payouts as well as payments, so it can be used to withdraw from a platform that connects to the rails. Whether a given exchange offers it depends on that exchange.
A payment that fails verification can be held, and one from a third party is flagged as such. Keep the receipt and its end-to-end identifier and contact the exchange’s support.
Settlement is immediate and final through the Central Bank’s ledger, so payments are not reversible in the usual sense. There is a narrow fraud-return route for proven fraud, but it is not a chargeback.
Yes. PIX requires an account at a Brazilian institution and a CPF or CNPJ. It has no cross-border equivalent.
