About buying crypto with Alipay

Alipay is a digital wallet and payment app run by Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba. It handles everyday payments through a wallet balance, linked bank cards, and other funding sources, and it’s one of the main ways people pay for things in mainland China. On the buyer side it processes in Chinese yuan.

Paying a crypto exchange with Alipay almost always means a P2P trade: you pay another person who’s selling crypto, not the exchange itself. You need a verified Alipay account, and you don’t hand over bank details since you pay by QR code or account identifier. The catch is that once you authorise an Alipay payment it’s treated as final, so there’s no chargeback if something goes wrong.

The list at the top of this page shows the exchanges that record Alipay as a method.

Alipay history

Alipay launched in China in 2004, created by Alibaba as an escrow-based payment service to support transactions on its Taobao marketplace. In 2011 it received a third-party payment licence from the People’s Bank of China. In 2014 Ant Financial Services Group, later renamed Ant Group, was spun off from Alibaba to house Alipay.

From 2016 the Alipay+ initiative began expanding acceptance to international partner wallets across Asia. In June 2021 the People’s Bank of China summoned Ant Group alongside four state banks and required it to put in place a monitoring system that blacklists merchants involved in virtual currency. In 2023 Ant Group moved its global merchant-facing payment infrastructure under the Antom brand, with Alipay staying the consumer wallet.

Alipay and crypto

Alipay does not offer crypto trading, buying, or custody of its own. There’s no way to hold a coin inside the app.

Its position on paying crypto exchanges is actively hostile to the use case. After the June 2021 summons by the People’s Bank of China, Ant Group committed to a compliance system that blacklists merchants whose transactions are identified as relating to virtual currency. Alipay has stated it does not support virtual currency transactions, and its terms require that any business category comply with all applicable laws and Alipay’s own requirements. An account identified as being used for crypto payments can be restricted or frozen, and that risk sits on your payment account separately from anything an exchange does.

How to buy crypto with Alipay

Where Alipay appears it’s almost always on a P2P desk, where you pay another person rather than the exchange. The steps below work at any venue that lists it.

  1. Pick an exchange. Choose one from the list at the top of this page that records Alipay among its methods.
  2. Verify your account. Complete the identity checks the exchange asks for before you try to trade.
  3. Find the Alipay offers. Filter the P2P offers by Alipay and compare the prices against the spot market before you accept one.
  4. Open the trade. Start the trade so the crypto is locked in escrow before you send any money.
  5. Pay from your own account. Pay only the person and amount the trade specifies, from an Alipay account in your own name, and keep the record.
  6. Confirm and release. Mark as paid once the money has left, then wait for the seller to release the crypto.

Can you buy crypto instantly with Alipay?

Alipay itself moves money in real time. Its own documentation describes the payment result as real-time, with a default session timeout of 14 minutes to complete the payment. The amount leaves your account in yuan straight away once you authorise it.

On a P2P trade the payment is only half the job. After you’ve paid, the seller still has to confirm and release the crypto from escrow, which can take a few minutes or longer depending on how quickly they respond. First-time identity checks on the exchange side can also hold up a first trade.

Fees when buying crypto with Alipay

Alipay doesn’t publish a consumer fee for ordinary payments, and its documented minimum payment is tiny at 0.1 CNY. Where it costs you something is on the trade itself: on a P2P desk the seller sets a price, and that price is usually wider than the spot market, so the gap is effectively your cost. An exchange may also charge a trading fee on top. Your card-issuing bank can apply its own per-transaction, daily, or monthly limits, which Alipay doesn’t cover. Check the price the trade shows against the spot market before you confirm, so you can see the full cost.

Mainland China’s authorities have prohibited crypto trading and declared related services illegal financial activity. That is the framework any use of Alipay for this purpose sits inside, and it is not something an exchange’s terms can change.

The direct consequence for a user is account risk on the payment side. Alipay has said it does not support virtual currency transactions, and accounts identified as being used for them can face restriction. That risk sits with your payment account, separately from anything the exchange does.

This page describes how the method works in practice. It is not advice to use it, and where local law prohibits the activity, that prohibition is the governing fact.

How to choose an exchange that accepts Alipay

When you compare the venues that list Alipay, look at the total price the trade shows before you confirm it, since on a P2P desk that spread is your real cost. Check how long account verification takes, which coins you can actually buy, and whether you can get money back out the way you want. Because the support here is on P2P desks, the depth of the market and the quality of the dispute process matter most, as those are what protect a trade. Also weigh the exchange’s security record. Use the list at the top of this page to compare the options.

Alipay pros and cons

What we like

  • Payments go through instantly and are free for ordinary transfers inside China.
  • It’s widely held, so a P2P counterparty can almost always accept it.
  • No bank details change hands, since you pay by QR code or account identifier.
  • Familiar and simple for anyone already using it every day.

What holds it back

  • Alipay does not support virtual currency transactions, and accounts used for crypto payments can be restricted or frozen.
  • Once authorised, a payment is treated as final, so there’s no chargeback.
  • It shows up on P2P desks rather than as a direct exchange deposit rail.
  • A standard account needs a verified Chinese mobile number and Chinese identity details.
Questions

Alipay FAQ

Yes. For a P2P trade the counterparty will usually require that the paying Alipay account name matches your verified identity on the exchange. Paying from someone else’s account can cause the trade to be rejected or held.

Not reliably. Alipay works as a push payment where you authorise each transfer, and it isn’t built as a payout rail for crypto sales. Treat it as a way to pay in, not a way to cash out.

If the payment doesn’t match the trade terms the seller may not release the crypto, and you’d have to open the platform’s dispute process. Always pay the exact person and amount the trade specifies.

It can be restricted if it’s identified as being used for crypto payments. That risk sits on your payment account independently of the exchange.

A standard Alipay account needs a verified Chinese mobile number and real-name identity details, typically linked to a Chinese bank card. The international versions aimed at travellers are not a funding route for an exchange.

A crypto deposit from a wallet you already control avoids the payment-rail problem entirely. Otherwise pick another supported method shown for the exchange.
