Our verdict

We think Hyperliquid is one of the most impressive decentralized exchanges available today, combining fully on-chain order book execution with CEX-like speed, zero gas fees, and no KYC requirements, making it accessible and cost-efficient for a wide range of traders. The platform's copy trading vaults, HIP-3 markets with reduced taker fees, and native prediction markets give it a depth that few perpetual DEXs can match.

Hyperliquid Overview

Cryptocurrency, a term that instantly brings decentralization to mind. Yet, when it comes to trading, decentralization was a challenge. However, perpetual DEXs like Hyperliquid, through innovation, have transformed the landscape of DEX trading. In this Hyperliquid Review, we’ll explore its features, fees, trading options, and overall experience. Additionally, we’ll examine alternatives to help you decide if it’s the right Perp DEX for you.
Hyperliquid is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain (L1) optimized from the ground up for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. It aims to create a fully on-chain, open financial system where user-built applications seamlessly integrate with native components, delivering exceptional performance without compromising the user experience. Powered by a custom consensus algorithm, HyperBFT, which draws inspiration from Hotstuff and its successors, the network is designed to handle over 200,000 orders per second with block latencies of less than one second.

How Hyperliquid is built: HIP-1 to HIP-4 sit on HyperCore, the trading engine, and apps by other teams sit on HyperEVM, the smart-contract layer; the two parts are connected and both run on HyperBFT consensus

At the core of Hyperliquid’s ecosystem is its flagship native application; the fully on-chain Hyperliquid DEX, a perpetual decentralized exchange featuring an order book model. This model helps Hyperliquid address the common issue of slippage in crypto trading, where the price of an asset can change between placing and executing a trade. By utilizing a decentralized order book solution, Hyperliquid offers traders the benefits of high liquidity and fast execution, while maintaining the privacy and control that decentralized platforms are known for.

Hyperliquid

Additional offerings include spot trading, permissionless liquidity, HIP-3 markets, prediction markets, and a native token standard. HIP-3 expands the list of tradable assets and gives users access to new markets with reduced taker fees. You also get zero gas fees, low trading fees, up to 40x leverage, and fast, approval-free transactions. This makes trading efficient and highly transparent, as every order, cancellation, trade, and liquidation is processed on-chain.

With more than 800K+ users, Hyperliquid has already crossed several major milestones. The platform has processed over $4.65 trillion in total trading volume, with monthly spot volume now exceeding $18.26B+ and monthly perpetuals volume reaching $250B+. The platform supports 316+ spot coins and 183+ futures contracts, offering leverage of up to 40x. Its advantages include high liquidity, fast transactions, low slippage (up to 10% for TP/SL orders), and no KYC requirements, making it highly appealing to traders.

However, it has some limitations, such as fewer spot trading options, limited chain support, and relatively high trading fees compared to other perpetual DEXs. Hyperliquid stands out as the only Layer 1 blockchain specifically dedicated to DeFi perpetual DEXs, offering a groundbreaking solution for decentralized financial applications.

Hyperliquid Products and Services

Being a decentralized Perp DEX, Hyperliquid’s choice of products and services is somewhat limited. However, it does offer the essentials. Let’s go through them one by one.

Trading Platform

Hyperliquid offers both spot and futures trading, making it a versatile platform for different types of traders. The platform makes it easy to find coins, with dedicated columns such as L1, L2, and AI DeFi for better organization.

hyperliquid trading platform

The order book has a tight spread, ensuring high liquidity, which is crucial for smooth and efficient trading. Thanks to its Layer 1 blockchain, all trades are processed on-chain, resulting in faster and more responsive execution compared to other perpetual DEXs.

Another standout feature is the easy swapping of coins between the perp and spot markets, offering flexibility for users who wish to transition seamlessly between different types of trades.

Vault

Vaults on Hyperliquid function similarly to traditional copy trading on centralized exchanges. A vault leader manages the trades, deciding when to open and close positions, while users can deposit funds into these vaults to mirror the leader’s strategies and potentially share in the profits. Vault owners receive 10% of the total profits as a reward for their management, creating an incentive for skilled traders to set up vaults and share their expertise. The deposit lock-up period lasts for 4 days, meaning funds can only be withdrawn 4 days after the latest deposit, and there may be some slippage when withdrawing or closing positions.

hyperliqud vault

Additionally, Hyperliquid offers an HLP (Hyperliquid Protocol Liquidity) vault, designed for market making and liquidations, fully owned by the community without profit-sharing fees.

Staking

Hyperliquid users can stake their $HYPE tokens directly on the platform through a fully onchain process. The current APR goes up to 2.22%, offering passive income opportunities for long-term holders. A common question users ask is whether this APR is net of commissions, and the answer is yes. The stated APR already factors in both validator commissions and staking pool uptime, giving users a more accurate expectation of their potential returns.

Hyperliquid Staking

Staking also provides trading benefits. Users in higher staking tiers receive fee reductions, with the Diamond tier offering up to 40% lower trading fees when you stake 500,000 HYPE. This makes staking valuable not just for passive income, but also for lowering your overall trading costs if you’re active on the platform.

Hyperliquid HIP-3

HIP-3 is Hyperliquid’s new system that expands the types of markets users can access. Instead of being limited to the usual crypto pairs, HIP-3 allows builders who stake 500,000 HYPE to launch entirely new perpetual markets. For users, this means more trading options, faster listings, and exposure to assets that normally don’t exist on a crypto exchange.

Hyperliquid HIP-3

Inside the HIP-3 category, you’ll find markets tied to things like tokenized stocks, synthetic assets, and niche instruments that wouldn’t appear on traditional platforms. HIP-3 markets launch with taker fees more than 90% lower than normal. Instead of paying around 0.045%, HIP-3 markets start at roughly 0.0045% to 0.009%, depending on activity, which can make active trading cheaper and give users tighter spreads and smoother execution as liquidity builds.

You don’t need to do anything special to use HIP-3 markets. They’re integrated directly into Hyperliquid’s interface, and you trade them the same way you would any other pair.

How HIP-3 works: a builder stakes 500,000 HYPE, launches its own perp market and earns fees, and a builder that runs a bad market can have its stake slashed

Prediction Markets

Hyperliquid has also introduced native prediction markets through HIP-4, allowing traders to speculate on off-chain real-world events. Unlike Polymarket, HIP-4 uses unified margin, so prediction positions can share the same account as spot and perpetual trades. Outcomes are settled natively through Hyperliquid’s validator set instead of external oracles, and opening or minting a prediction position carries zero fees. Fees only apply when positions are closed or settled.

Hyperliquid Stats

Because Hyperliquid runs entirely on its own Layer 1 blockchain, all trading and protocol data is publicly accessible. According to the Hyperliquid Stats dashboard, since mid-2023 the platform has recorded over $2.14 trillion in total trading volume and nearly 800,000 unique users. The dashboard offers visibility into a wide range of metrics, including deposits, withdrawals, liquidations, funding rates, and net PnLs.

Hyperliquid Stats

This level of transparency allows users to review protocol activity in real time, without relying on third-party aggregators or closed systems. Whether assessing order flow, trader performance, or overall market activity, the available data helps provide a clearer picture of how the platform operates on a daily basis.

Hyperliquid Token (HYPE)

HYPE is the native coin of Hyperliquid’s network. It connects the exchange with the wider blockchain ecosystem: users can stake HYPE to help secure the network, while applications on HyperEVM use it to pay transaction fees. HYPE held in a trading balance and HYPE committed to staking serve different purposes, so buying the coin alone does not activate staking benefits.

For traders, the practical benefit is a staking-based reduction in fees. Hyperliquid’s fee documentation combines trading-volume tiers with discounts based on staked HYPE. The applicable rate depends on the qualifying stake and account setup. Traders should use the fee rate shown for their account when comparing the saving with the amount they would need to stake.

HYPE also participates in the network’s fee mechanisms. The Assistance Fund converts eligible trading fees into HYPE, which the current documentation describes as burned. Separately, HyperEVM documentation explains that both base and priority transaction fees are burned. These mechanisms tie token use to exchange and blockchain activity; they do not fix HYPE’s market price.

Hyperliquid Security & Regulation

Hyperliquid’s Layer 1 blockchain ensures strong security with native multi-sig support, allowing multiple private keys to control a single account. All trades are processed on-chain via smart contracts, providing high security. However, there are risks, including potential vulnerabilities in the Arbitrum bridge smart contracts, which could result in the loss of user funds. Hyperliquid’s L1 is also less tested than established blockchains, risking downtime or consensus issues.

Market liquidity risk could lead to price slippage, especially in the early stages. Additionally, compromised price oracles could trigger incorrect liquidations. To mitigate these risks, Hyperliquid implements open interest caps and prevents orders from being placed too far from the oracle price.

Self-custody by design Hyperliquid is non-custodial, so funds stay in your own wallet, so custodial safeguards (proof of reserves, cold storage, 2FA, withdrawal whitelists) don't apply here. Security rests on the protocol's on-chain contracts and your own wallet hygiene.
No security incident on record We track exchange hacks in our database, nothing is on file for Hyperliquid. A clean record can change at any time; past security performance never guarantees future safety.
Risk warning Even a high rating doesn’t remove market or smart-contract risk. Cryptoassets are volatile and largely unregulated. On a non-custodial exchange you alone control your keys. Mistaken transactions and contract exploits can’t be reversed, and deposit protection schemes don’t apply.

Hyperliquid Airdrop

On November 29, 2024, Hyperliquid completed its Genesis Event, distributing 310 million HYPE tokens to over 90,000 users, making it one of the largest airdrops in DeFi history.

There may be future airdrop events: 38.888% of the total HYPE supply is reserved for future emissions and community rewards. To participate, users can interact with their testnet by adding it to MetaMask and engaging with the platform.

How HYPE was split at launch: 38.9% future rewards, 31% airdrop, 23.8% core team, 6% foundation and 0.3% grants and other
