About buying crypto with Coinify

Coinify is a Danish crypto payments provider. It runs a trade platform where people buy and sell crypto, and it also supplies a widget that other platforms embed in their own checkouts. That is how you’ll usually meet it when funding an exchange account.

Paying with Coinify means you enter an amount, verify your identity, and pay by card or bank transfer. The crypto goes to a wallet address you supply. You’ll need to complete identity checks, but the main thing to understand is that crypto transactions are irreversible: once a payment is processed and the coins are sent, they can’t be clawed back, so an incorrect wallet address means lost funds.

The list at the top of this page shows the exchanges that accept Coinify, filtered for where you are.

Coinify history

Coinify ApS was incorporated in 2014 and is based at Højbro Plads 10 in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was founded by Mark Højgaard and Hans Henrik Hoffmeyer, whose backgrounds cover payments, finance, risk, and e-commerce; the team’s work with virtual currencies goes back to 2010.

Coinify was a founding member of the Blockchain and Virtual Currencies Working Group under the European Commission, helping shape regulation including the EU’s 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive. Since 2019 it has committed to the UN Global Compact. In May 2023 Coinify ApS was acquired by Marketcom Software; the terms weren’t disclosed. That change of ownership is worth a moment’s attention for a service that holds your identity documents and takes your payments.

Coinify and crypto

Coinify does run its own crypto service. Through its trade platform, individuals and businesses can buy and sell crypto directly, paying by credit or debit card or by bank transfer. There’s also a payments API that lets partner platforms embed a crypto trade widget for their users.

When you buy, the crypto is delivered to a wallet address you supply and control. Coinify doesn’t appear to hold crypto on your behalf; there’s no custodial wallet, so you need a valid receiving address ready. Because the delivery happens on the blockchain, it’s final. Coinify states plainly that if you enter an incorrect wallet address, the funds are still sent and can’t be recovered.

How to buy crypto with Coinify

The steps are much the same wherever you see Coinify offered.

  1. Pick an exchange. Choose one from the list at the top of this page, then open its buy or deposit screen.
  2. Verify your account. Complete the identity checks, which you’ll do with Coinify as well as with the exchange.
  3. Choose Coinify. Select it as your payment method and enter the amount you want to spend.
  4. Pay from your own account. Pay by card or bank transfer from an account in your own name.
  5. Check and buy. Compare the crypto amount quoted against the spot price, then confirm.
  6. Keep the reference. Save the order reference in case you need to chase a payment.

Can you buy crypto instantly with Coinify?

Card payments complete fastest, usually within minutes, since they’re authorised on the spot with 3D Secure. Bank transfers take longer because you have to push the money to Coinify’s bank details yourself, and the crypto is only delivered once that transfer arrives. A few things slow a payment down: weekends and bank cut-off times hold up transfers, and first-time identity checks can add a delay before your first purchase clears. Once the crypto is sent it can’t be reversed, so check everything before you confirm.

Fees when buying crypto with Coinify

Paying with Coinify costs a fee plus a spread on the exchange rate, which is how every provider in this category works. That makes it more expensive than buying straight on an exchange order book. A card payment generally costs more than a bank transfer, so if both are offered and you can wait, the bank route is cheaper.

The exchange you’re funding may add something of its own on top. The way to see the real cost is to compare the crypto quantity quoted against the spot price before you confirm, rather than reading the fee percentage alone.

Checking who you are contracting with

This applies to every embedded provider, but it is worth spelling out on a service whose corporate ownership has moved. The entity taking your payment and holding your identity documents is named in the terms you accept inside the widget, not on the exchange’s homepage.

Two minutes of reading tells you the legal name, the jurisdiction, and which regulator, if any, it is registered with. That is the information that decides what happens if the service fails, not the brand on the button.

It also tells you where to complain. Support for an embedded provider is the provider’s, and the exchange will simply redirect you there.

How to choose an exchange that accepts Coinify

The exchanges that accept Coinify differ in ways worth comparing. Look at the total cost shown before you confirm, since that quoted crypto amount is what you actually get. Check how long account verification takes, which coins you can buy, and whether you can sell back out the same way. The exchange’s security record matters too. The list at the top of this page shows the venues that record Coinify as a method, filtered for where you are, so start there.

Coinify pros and cons

What we like

  • A long operating history in Europe, which is rarer in this category than it should be.
  • Card and bank transfer both accepted, so there’s a cheaper route if you can wait.
  • Buy and sell in the same place, which not every on-ramp offers.
  • Verification and payment handled inside the flow, with nothing to arrange beforehand.

What holds it back

  • A fee plus a spread, so more expensive than an exchange order book.
  • Separate identity verification and separate support from the exchange’s.
  • Payments are irreversible, and a wrong wallet address means lost funds.
  • Acceptance across exchanges is limited.
Questions

Coinify FAQ

Yes. You pay from a card or bank account in your own name, and the identity checks are built around that. Paying on someone else’s behalf isn’t how it works.

Coinify’s own trade platform supports selling crypto for fiat as well as buying. Whether that’s available to you depends on your market and on the platform you’re using it through.

Coinify handles a failed payment using your order reference, so keep it. The exchange can’t help with a payment that never reached it.

Crypto transactions are irreversible. If an incorrect address is entered the funds are still sent and can’t be recovered, so check the address carefully before you confirm.

It’s a fiat-to-crypto gateway with its own consumer service and an embedded product other platforms use. It isn’t an order-book exchange.

Check the deposit screen for another supported method, such as a direct card or bank transfer. The list at the top of this page shows which exchanges take Coinify.
