About buying crypto with iDEAL
iDEAL is the Netherlands’ online bank payment method. Instead of typing card details, you pick your bank at checkout, get redirected into your own banking environment, approve a payment that’s already filled in, and come back. The money moves directly from your account. In 2024 it handled more than 1.47 billion transactions, so it’s firmly embedded in Dutch online payments.
Paying a crypto exchange with iDEAL means you need an account at a participating Dutch bank and nothing more. You don’t hand over card numbers, and the payment comes from an account in your own name, so the amount and the recipient are shown to you by your bank. The trade-off is that there’s no chargeback: once approved, the payment is final.
The list at the top of this page shows which exchanges accept iDEAL.
iDEAL history
iDEAL launched in 2005, built by the largest Dutch banks and unified under the Currence scheme, which formally took over its governance in 2006. Within its first year it processed over a million transactions. It was revamped in 2020 to keep up with the growth of e-commerce, and in early 2023 added faster checkout features built around an iDEAL profile.
In October 2023 the European Payments Initiative (EPI) acquired iDEAL from Currence, with the aim of folding it into a pan-European instant payment scheme. From early 2026 it’s scheduled to rebrand to iDEAL | Wero and then migrate fully to Wero for bank-redirect payments. For now, the way you pay is unchanged.
iDEAL and crypto
iDEAL is a payment scheme, not a crypto platform. Neither Currence nor EPI, which runs it now, offers any way to buy, hold or trade crypto in an app of its own. So there’s no iDEAL wallet holding coins for you.
The scheme itself has published no policy that specifically permits or blocks using iDEAL to fund a crypto exchange. That decision rests with the participating banks and the individual merchants. In practice, if an exchange lists iDEAL as a deposit method, you can use it the same way you’d use it anywhere else.
How to buy crypto with iDEAL
- Pick an exchange. Choose one from the list at the top of this page and complete its identity verification first.
- Verify your account. Finish any checks the exchange asks for before you try to deposit.
- Choose iDEAL. On the deposit or buy screen, select EUR and pick iDEAL, then enter the amount and select your bank.
- Approve in your bank. Confirm the payment in your own banking app, from an account in your own name, checking the amount and recipient shown there.
- Buy your crypto. Once the balance appears, usually within a couple of minutes, place your order.
Can you buy crypto instantly with iDEAL?
An iDEAL payment usually credits within a minute or two, because it’s a real-time push transfer from your bank that confirms as soon as you approve it. A first-time deposit can take a little longer if the exchange runs extra checks on a new account. If nothing has credited after about fifteen minutes, keep your bank’s transaction record and contact the exchange’s support. Since the payment is final and can’t be reversed, there’s no clawback to wait out.
Fees when buying crypto with iDEAL
For the payer, iDEAL is normally free or very cheap, since it’s an ordinary bank transfer underneath. Any fee you see on top is charged by the exchange, not by the scheme. An exchange may add a deposit fee, or build a wider margin into an instant buy where you’re buying crypto directly rather than just funding a balance. Before you confirm, check the total the exchange shows you: the amount leaving your account against the amount of crypto you’ll receive. That figure is the real cost.
Why an iDEAL payment cannot be undone
A card payment is a promise the network can claw back; an iDEAL payment is a bank transfer you personally authorised. Once your bank has executed it the money is gone in the same way it would be if you had typed the account details yourself.
This is why it is worth reading the confirmation screen inside your banking app rather than clicking through it. The amount and the recipient name shown there are the last accurate check you get.
It also means iDEAL carries none of the fraud protection people associate with cards. The protection it offers is preventive, because you are inside your own bank when you approve, not corrective.
How to choose an exchange that accepts iDEAL
Between exchanges that accept iDEAL, compare the total cost each one shows before you confirm, how long its account verification takes, and whether you can withdraw your money afterwards. iDEAL is a pay-in method only, so payouts come back by SEPA to a bank account rather than through iDEAL itself. Check which coins you can buy, whether the exchange also supports SEPA as a higher-limit fallback, and its security record. The list at the top of this page shows every exchange that accepts iDEAL.
iDEAL pros and cons
What we like
- Fast, since the deposit usually credits within a couple of minutes.
- No reference code, no beneficiary setup and no card details to enter.
- Approved inside your own banking environment, so the amount and payee are shown by your bank.
- Usually free or very cheap, since it’s a bank transfer underneath.
What holds it back
- Works only from an account at a participating Dutch bank, in euros.
- No chargeback, so an iDEAL payment can’t be reversed once approved.
- Your bank sets the limit, which is usually lower than a manual SEPA transfer allows.
- Not every exchange supports it, so the choice is narrower than with SEPA.
iDEAL FAQ
Yes. iDEAL works from an account at a participating Dutch bank in your own name, so the payment and your identity are already linked. The third-party problem that affects manual transfers doesn’t arise.
No. iDEAL is a pay-in method only. When an exchange pays you out, it does so by SEPA to your bank account, not through iDEAL.
No. It’s a bank transfer you authorised, so there’s no chargeback. The only route for a genuine error is asking the recipient to send it back.
If you cancel or the approval doesn’t go through, no money leaves your account. If an amount left but nothing credited after about fifteen minutes, keep your bank’s transaction record and contact the exchange’s support.
For the payer it’s normally free. Any fee you see is charged by the exchange, not by the scheme.
A SEPA transfer is the equivalent euro route. It’s slower, but it reaches every venue that takes euros and allows higher limits for a large deposit.
