About buying crypto with BTCDirect
BTCDirect is a European crypto broker and a way to pay for crypto. You enter an amount, it shows you a quoted price, and you accept or decline. A broker sells you crypto from its own book at a price it quotes, rather than matching you against other users on an order book, and its margin sits inside that price.
To use it you need an account in your own name, identity verification, euros, and a supported payment method. You don’t have to share bank login details with the exchange, because you authorise the payment yourself. One limit worth knowing: once crypto is dispatched, the transaction is final.

BTCDirect history
BTCDirect is run by BTC Direct Europe B.V., a private company based in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. It was founded in 2013 by Mike Hutting, Davy Stevens and Mark Bakker, which makes it one of Europe’s longest-standing crypto platforms.
In October 2020 the company raised a Series A round of about 11 million euros. In 2021 it renewed the platform, expanding the coin offering to more than 50 cryptocurrencies and adding built-in wallets. Since the EU’s MiCA rules came in, BTCDirect has obtained a MiCA licence through the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets, which brings it into full compliance with EU crypto-asset rules. For someone paying with it today, that licence and the long operating history are the facts that matter.
BTCDirect and crypto
BTCDirect’s core product is selling crypto directly to people. It offers more than 50 coins, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, XRP and Bitcoin Cash, which you buy with euros. The model is non-custodial for the buyer: once you’ve paid, the coins are sent straight to your own wallet address, so BTCDirect doesn’t hold your crypto afterwards. It also offers built-in wallets on its own platform and supports selling crypto back for euros.
This is separate from using BTCDirect to fund an exchange account. When you pay through it, you still complete your buy and the crypto lands in the wallet you gave. The quote is take-it-or-leave-it and valid for a short window.
How to buy crypto with BTCDirect
These steps work at any exchange that accepts BTCDirect.
- Pick an exchange. Choose one from the list at the top of this page and open its buy screen.
- Verify your account. Complete identity verification, since all users must pass it before buying.
- Choose BTCDirect. Select it on the deposit or buy screen and enter the amount you want to spend.
- Check the quote. Compare the crypto quantity you’re offered against the spot price, because that gap is the whole cost.
- Pay from your own account. Authorise the payment in your own banking app or card form; it must come from an account in your name.
- Accept within the window. Confirm the quote before it expires, and request a fresh one if it does.
Can you buy crypto instantly with BTCDirect?
A BTCDirect payment is usually fast. You authorise it yourself in your banking app or on a card form, and the provider states crypto is on its way within minutes, with delivery in about two minutes. A few things can slow it down. A first-time payment may trigger extra identity checks before anything moves. A plain bank transfer can take longer than an instant method, and weekends or bank cut-off times can push it to the next working day. Once the crypto is dispatched to a wallet, it’s final and can’t be reversed.
Fees when buying crypto with BTCDirect
With a broker there’s one number, and the market price, the margin and the payment cost are all folded into it. BTCDirect doesn’t show its margin as a separate fee; it sits inside the quoted price, and it tends to be wider than an exchange commission would be. No set fee percentage is published on its own pages. The minimum order is 30 euros. An exchange may add something on top, such as a deposit charge or a wider price on instant buys. To see the full cost before you confirm, compare the crypto quantity the quote buys against the spot price and work out the difference.
Broker pricing versus an order book
On an order book you see a bid and an ask, and you pay a stated commission on top. Both numbers are visible, and on a heavily traded pair the gap between them is small. With a broker there is one number, and everything, the market price, the margin, the payment cost, is folded into it.
Neither model is dishonest. The broker’s quote is exactly what you will pay, which is arguably clearer than a fee schedule with tiers. What it is not is cheap: folding costs into a price makes them invisible, and invisible costs tend to be larger.
The test is the same thirty seconds every time. Note the quantity the quote buys, look up the spot price, and work out the difference as a percentage. If that number is comfortable, the convenience is worth it.
How to choose an exchange that accepts BTCDirect
Compare a few things between exchanges that accept BTCDirect. Check the total cost shown before you confirm, since that’s the number that matters. Look at how long identity verification takes, and whether you can withdraw back to BTCDirect if you want to sell later. Check which coins you can buy and the venue’s security record. The list at the top of this page shows the exchanges that record BTCDirect among their methods, so start there and work through these points.
BTCDirect pros and cons
What we like
- A fixed quoted price with no order book to learn.
- European payment methods including iDEAL, Bancontact and SEPA, not just cards.
- A long operating history in the European retail market, now MiCA-licensed.
- Delivers to a wallet address you control if you prefer self-custody.
What holds it back
- The margin is inside the quoted price rather than shown as a fee.
- More expensive than an exchange order book for the same purchase.
- Euro and SEPA only, so it won’t help outside that area.
- No limit orders, no partial fills, and payments are final once crypto is sent.
BTCDirect FAQ
Yes. You authorise a BTCDirect payment yourself from your own bank or card, and identity verification ties the account to you. A payment from someone else’s account won’t fit that model.
BTCDirect supports selling crypto back for euros, so you can pay out that way. Check the exact route and whether your exchange supports returning funds through it before you rely on it.
If the payment doesn’t go through, no crypto is dispatched and you simply try again or request a fresh quote. Quotes are valid only for a short window, so an expired one needs replacing.
Inside the quoted price. Compare the crypto quantity you’re offered against the spot price to see it.
No. A broker quote is take-it-or-leave-it and valid for a short window.
