About buying crypto with ZEN

ZEN, also known as zen.com, is a European electronic money institution that offers multi-currency accounts, payment cards and merchant services. You hold balances in several currencies, spend from them by card or transfer, and manage the whole thing from an app. Only a limited number of crypto exchanges list it as a named deposit method.

Paying an exchange with ZEN means you authorise the payment from an account in your own name. You need a verified ZEN account with a funded balance, and the name on it has to match the name on your exchange account. Because it is an e-money institution and not a bank, your balance is safeguarded rather than deposit-insured, which matters for anything you leave sitting there.

The list at the top of this page shows the exchanges that record ZEN.

ZEN history

ZEN is run by UAB ZEN.COM, which was founded in 2018 by Dawid Rozek, also a co-founder of G2A.COM. It got its e-money licence from the Bank of Lithuania on 24 May 2018 and launched its consumer services in November 2020. In 2022 it replaced the discontinued G2A PAY payment service.

The company has since expanded its licensing. In 2024 it was granted a major payment institution licence by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and in August 2024 its UK entity, ZEN-UK Limited, was authorised as an e-money institution by the Financial Conduct Authority. By Q3 2025 it held a 16.94% share of revenue among independent electronic money institutions operating in Lithuania.

ZEN and crypto

ZEN is not itself a crypto-asset service provider, but its app does let you buy and send cryptocurrency directly from your euro balance. Those transfers are powered by third-party exchange providers who act under their own terms and regulatory responsibility; ZEN handles only the fiat payment side and does not store or hold any crypto.

You can also top up your euro balance using digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Tether, which are automatically converted into euros on arrival. One limit to note: these crypto services are available only to customers of UAB ZEN.COM, not to customers of its UK or Singapore entities. And once a crypto transfer is processed, it cannot be cancelled.

How to buy crypto with ZEN

The steps are much the same wherever ZEN is accepted.

  1. Pick an exchange. Choose one from the list at the top of this page that records ZEN.
  2. Verify your account. Complete the exchange’s identity checks before you try to deposit.
  3. Verify ZEN too. Make sure your ZEN account is verified and holds a funded balance.
  4. Choose ZEN to pay. Select it on the deposit or buy screen where it is offered.
  5. Pay from your own account. Use a ZEN account in your own name, matching the name on your exchange account.
  6. Buy your crypto. Once the deposit credits, place your order.

Can you buy crypto instantly with ZEN?

ZEN describes its Pay Wallet transfers as its fastest deposit and withdrawal method, and its business crypto service advertises instant fiat settlement. In practice a payment made directly from your ZEN balance usually reaches an exchange account within minutes.

A few things can slow that down. A first-time payment may face extra identity checks, and if the exchange credits by ordinary bank transfer instead, weekends and bank cut-off times can push it to the next working day. A direct wallet payment avoids most of that.

Fees when buying crypto with ZEN

ZEN does not state specific fee figures for paying a crypto exchange, so treat the cost as modest rather than fixed. The charge to watch is currency conversion: if you pay in a currency you do not already hold, ZEN converts your balance, and the margin on that is usually larger than any explicit fee in the chain.

The exchange may add its own cost on top, whether a deposit fee or a wider price on an instant buy. Before you confirm, check the full amount the exchange shows against what you expect to spend, including any conversion, so there are no surprises.

Safeguarding is not deposit insurance

An e-money institution does not hold your money the way a bank does. Balances are held in safeguarded accounts at a bank, separated from the firm’s own funds, which protects them if the firm fails, but it is a different mechanism from a national deposit guarantee scheme, and the protections and timelines are not the same.

The practical implication is about what you leave sitting there. Using the account to move money through is one thing; holding a significant balance in it long-term is a decision worth making deliberately.

This applies to every e-money account on this site, not to ZEN specifically. It is simply more visible here because the alternative, a bank, is the obvious comparison.

How to choose an exchange that accepts ZEN

Compare a few things across the exchanges that accept ZEN. Look at the total cost shown before you confirm, how long account verification is likely to take, and whether you can withdraw back to ZEN or only out by another route. Check that the coins you want to buy are listed, and look at each exchange’s security record. The list at the top of this page shows which ones record ZEN, and you can filter from there.

ZEN pros and cons

What we like

  • Payments from your ZEN balance usually land within minutes.
  • Multi-currency balances held in one European account.
  • Quick app-based setup compared with a traditional bank.
  • Transfers within the ZEN network settle instantly.

What holds it back

  • It is an e-money institution, so balances are safeguarded rather than deposit-insured.
  • Only a limited number of exchanges list ZEN as a named deposit method.
  • A conversion margin applies when you pay in a currency you do not hold.
  • Coverage is European, so it is not a route from most of the world.
Questions

ZEN FAQ

Yes. The name on your ZEN account must match the name on your exchange account. Payments from someone else’s account are generally rejected.

No. It is a European electronic money institution, so balances are safeguarded rather than covered by a deposit guarantee scheme.

Where the exchange pays out by bank transfer, you can send it to your ZEN account. A ZEN-specific payout route is uncommon.

A failed payment normally leaves the money in your ZEN balance, so you can try again. A crypto transfer made in the app, though, cannot be cancelled once it has been processed.

Fund it another way instead, such as an ordinary bank transfer from your ZEN account or a card at an exchange that accepts cards.
