How This Tracker Works

Every Ethereum transaction pays a base fee, which the network sets for each block, plus a priority fee, a tip to the validator that includes the transaction. Slow, Standard and Fast add three typical priority fees to the base fee expected for the next block: the priority fees at the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles of what transactions paid in the last 20 blocks.

We read these numbers from public Ethereum nodes about every 12 seconds, as each new block arrives, and the page refreshes them every 15 seconds while you’re viewing it. The ETH price comes from exchange markets quoted in USDT, so the dollar figures treat one USDT as one dollar. The cost table uses the median gas each action used on Ethereum in September 2026. A token transfer to an address that has never held that token uses more, about 63,000 gas.

Understanding Gas in Ethereum

Gas is the unit that measures the computational work required to execute your transaction or smart contract on the network. You pay for it in ETH, and the fee is what gets your transaction into a block.

When you set out to make a transaction, you pay a fee denominated in gwei, which is one billionth of an ETH. These fees are determined by supply, demand, and the network’s capacity at the moment you initiate your transaction. Because every transaction pays a fee, spamming the network is expensive.

Each transaction you make requires a specific amount of gas based on its complexity. A plain ETH transfer always uses 21,000 gas, while a token swap on Uniswap typically uses about seven times as much. To manage these fees, you can set a maximum fee you’re willing to pay; any excess amount is refunded.

What Factors Affect Gas Prices?

Three things decide what a transaction costs:

  • Network congestion: Higher demand for transaction processing leads to increased gas prices, as more users compete for faster transaction confirmation.
  • Transaction complexity: More complex transactions use more gas, so they cost more at the same gas price.
  • ETH price: Fees are paid in ETH, so the same fee costs more in dollars when ETH’s price rises.

How Do You Calculate Gas Fees?

You calculate the total fee by multiplying the gas units used by the sum of the base fee and the priority fee:

Total fee = Gas units used × (Base fee + Priority fee)

The base fee is set automatically by the network and adjusts according to current demand. It is burned, not paid to anyone. When the network is busy, this fee increases, and you might need to offer a higher priority fee, a tip to the validator, to ensure your transaction is processed quickly. Wallets typically suggest a fee for you, but you can adjust it based on real-time conditions.

For example, a plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas. With a base fee of 0.17 gwei and a priority fee of 0.15 gwei, the fee is 21,000 × 0.32 gwei = 6,720 gwei, or 0.00000672 ETH. With ETH at $2,700, that’s under 2 cents.

How Ethereum Fees Changed in 2021

Before the London upgrade in August 2021, your fee was the gas used multiplied by a single gas price that you offered. London (EIP-1559) split that price into a base fee, which the network sets for each block and burns, and a priority fee that you add to speed up your transaction. The Merge in September 2022 moved Ethereum to proof of stake, but it did not change how fees are calculated.

How to Avoid High Gas Fees

Start with the live prices at the top of this page. If you’re not pressed for time, waiting for quieter hours, usually nights and weekends (UTC), can significantly reduce your transaction fees.

Another option is a Layer 2 network. Platforms like Arbitrum, Optimism and Base handle transactions off the main Ethereum chain, allowing you to bypass congestion. Because these networks bundle transactions before finalizing them on Ethereum, you’ll often pay far less in fees.

Finally, set a custom gas fee if your wallet allows it. By opting for a lower fee, you might wait a bit longer, but you can often avoid paying a premium when the network is busy.

FAQs

Fees usually drop when fewer people are transacting. Over the four weeks to 23 September 2026, the base fee averaged about 0.05 gwei at night and on weekends (UTC) and 0.3 to 1.1 gwei on weekday afternoons (UTC), when US markets are open. Check the live prices above before you send.

Fees spike when many people want their transactions in the next block, for example during a popular token or NFT launch. The base fee rises by up to 12.5% for each block that is more than half full, and users add higher priority fees to get ahead of others.

The gas limit is the maximum amount of gas your transaction may use. If the transaction needs more gas than the limit allows, it fails, and you still pay for all the gas it used, up to the limit.

No. Gas fees are mandatory for every Ethereum transaction. However, you can reduce costs by transacting during low-demand periods, using Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum or Base, or even opting for other blockchains with lower fees, such as Solana.
