About buying crypto with Revolut Pay

Revolut Pay is a checkout button that pays directly from your Revolut account. Instead of entering a card number, you tap the button, approve the payment in the Revolut app, and the money moves from your balance. It’s run by Revolut, a licensed bank with tens of millions of customers across Europe and the UK.

On a crypto exchange that supports it, choosing Revolut Pay opens the app, shows you the amount and the recipient, and asks you to confirm. The payment comes from an account in your own name, so there’s no card number to share and no reference code to lose. One thing to be clear about: this is an account payment, not a card one, so there’s no chargeback if something goes wrong.

Revolut Pay history

Revolut Pay is operated by Revolut and launched as an online checkout and in-store QR-code payment product. In 2023 Revolut partnered with crypto on-ramp provider Mercuryo to extend Revolut Pay as a fiat funding method for buying cryptocurrency, rolling the service out across Mercuryo’s merchant network. That partnership was described as covering the EEA with USD, EUR, and GBP support. Revolut’s checkout terms also reference the UK, EEA, Australia, and Singapore as markets where new Revolut accounts can be opened in connection with a Revolut Pay transaction.

Revolut Pay and crypto

Revolut runs its own in-app crypto feature: the app lets you buy and hold crypto assets directly, separate from using the account to fund an outside venue. The Mercuryo partnership cited 44 crypto assets available through Revolut Pay’s infrastructure.

As a payment method pointed at outside merchants, Revolut Pay is used as a fiat on-ramp for buying crypto on third-party platforms. On crypto services it’s generally available for buy transactions only. Revolut hasn’t published a policy against using Revolut Pay at crypto exchanges, and the method is actively offered for that purpose.

  3. Choose Revolut Pay. On the deposit or buy screen, select Revolut Pay as your payment method.

Can you buy crypto instantly with Revolut Pay?

A Revolut Pay deposit usually credits within minutes. You approve it in the app and the money moves from your balance straight away, and the merchant typically gets confirmation within seconds.

A few things can slow it down. A first-time payment may trigger extra identity checks. If you’re paying in a currency you don’t already hold, an in-app conversion happens, and weekend markups apply on some currency pairs, so a Saturday deposit can cost more than the same one midweek.

Fees when buying crypto with Revolut Pay

Revolut Pay is normally free for the payer, since it skips the card networks. The cost to watch is currency conversion: if you pay in a currency you don’t already hold, Revolut converts your balance, and a markup applies on some pairs outside market hours.

An exchange may add its own charge on top, such as a deposit fee or a wider price on instant buys. Check the full amount on the confirmation screen, including any conversion, before you confirm.

Revolut Pay versus your Revolut card

Both move money from the same account, but they arrive at the exchange as different things. The card is a card deposit: the venue charges its card fee, your transaction may be classified the way card crypto purchases usually are, and card limits apply. Revolut Pay is an account payment: no card fee, higher practical limits, no cash-advance question.

Where both are offered, Revolut Pay is almost always the cheaper of the two. The exception is if you specifically want the transaction to run on a card for some reason of your own.

One consequence to be clear about: an account payment has no chargeback. The card route, whatever it costs, retains a dispute mechanism that Revolut Pay does not.

How to choose an exchange that accepts Revolut Pay

Compare a few things between exchanges that accept Revolut Pay. Look at the total cost shown before you confirm, how long account verification takes, and whether you can withdraw back out to a bank account you hold. Check which coins each one lets you buy, and which currencies it charges in, since matching your Revolut balance avoids a conversion. The exchange’s security record matters too. Revolut Pay pros and cons

What we like

  • Fast: approve in the app and the deposit usually credits within minutes.
  • Normally free for the payer, since it skips the card networks.
  • Multi-currency balances, so you can pay in the currency the venue charges in.
  • Paid from a regulated account in your own name, with no reference code to mistype.

What holds it back

  • Requires a Revolut account, so it’s only useful where Revolut operates.
  • Weekend conversion markups apply on some currency pairs.
  • No chargeback, since this is an account payment, not a card transaction.
  • Accepted at a limited number of exchanges compared with cards or bank transfers.
Questions

Revolut Pay FAQ

Yes. Revolut Pay draws from your own Revolut account, authenticated in the app with a passcode or biometrics. The identity link is clean, with no reference code to lose.

Revolut Pay is a way to pay in, not a withdrawal method. To get money out, check whether the exchange can pay back to a bank account you hold.

If the payment doesn’t go through, the money stays in your Revolut balance and nothing reaches the exchange. You can check the amount and recipient in the app before you confirm, and try again.

No. It’s an account-to-account payment, so there’s no chargeback in the card sense. Refunds are possible through the merchant, but you can’t dispute it the way you would a card charge.

Check the deposit screen for a card or bank transfer option instead. You can still fund from your Revolut account using your Revolut card where that’s accepted.
