UPI, short for Unified Payments Interface, is India’s instant retail payment system. It sits on top of your existing bank account and lets you pay by scanning a QR code or entering a UPI ID, without ever sharing an account number. It runs around the clock and settles in seconds, and for most people in India it’s now the default way to move money.
Paying a crypto exchange with UPI means you approve a payment request in your UPI app with a PIN, and the rupees land in your exchange account. You need an Indian bank account linked to a UPI app and a UPI PIN. You don’t hand over your account number. One thing to understand up front: a completed UPI payment is final, with no chargeback.
The list at the top of this page shows which exchanges accept UPI.
UPI is built and run by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a not-for-profit body co-founded by the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks’ Association. The pilot launched on 11 April 2016 in Mumbai, with 21 member banks taking part. From 25 August 2016, banks began putting UPI-enabled apps on the Google Play Store.
Use has grown enormously since. In October 2024 UPI processed 16.58 billion transactions in a single month, and by September 2025 it was handling close to 20 billion a month with a total monthly value above $280 billion. More than 550 Indian banks now take part. By 2025 UPI accounted for roughly 83% of all digital payments in India.
NPCI, which runs the scheme, doesn’t offer any way to buy, sell or hold cryptocurrency itself. UPI is a payment rail, not a wallet for coins. Where you can pay a crypto business with UPI, it’s because that business has wired the method in through a third-party payment processor, not because UPI supports crypto directly.
NPCI has also been cool on the idea. In April 2022 it put out a public statement saying it was not aware of any crypto exchange using UPI, which led at least one large international exchange to suspend UPI crypto purchases in India shortly after launching them. That history is a big part of why support for these payments has been patchy.
The steps are much the same wherever UPI is accepted.
UPI is built to clear and settle in seconds, so a deposit usually credits within moments, any day of the week, holidays included. A few things can slow it down. First-time payments to a new payee may get extra checks, your bank may apply its own cut-off or review, and a payment to a crypto business can be blocked outright. If nothing has credited after a few minutes, keep the UPI transaction reference and contact the exchange’s support rather than paying again.
UPI is widely described as free for personal payments, and the scheme itself doesn’t charge you for a transfer. What you pay, if anything, comes from the exchange. A venue may add a deposit fee, or build a wider margin into the price on an instant buy, so the rupee amount you send isn’t always the full cost. Before you confirm, check the exchange’s deposit screen and its order preview, which should show the total and any spread so you can see what you’re paying all in before committing.
UPI carries a per-transaction cap and a daily cap, both well below what a bank transfer allows, and individual banks often set their own lower limits on top. For a larger deposit, IMPS or NEFT is the more practical rail.
When a payment is declined, the error message rarely says why. The common causes are the bank’s own restriction on crypto merchants, the daily cap already being used, or the receiving handle being temporarily deregistered. None of them are fixable from the exchange side.
Repeated failed attempts can trigger a temporary block on your UPI ID. If two attempts fail, stop and use another rail.
Before you commit, line up a few things across the venues on the list above. Check the total cost shown on the confirmation screen, not just the advertised rate, since that’s the number you actually pay. See how long identity verification takes, because some checks clear in minutes and others take days. Find out whether you can withdraw rupees back to UPI, not only deposit with it. Look at which coins you can buy, and at the exchange’s security track record. A venue that also offers IMPS and a bank transfer gives you a fallback when one rail is blocked.
Yes. You pay from a UPI app linked to your own bank account, authorised with your PIN. Paying from someone else’s account tends to cause problems with the exchange’s name checks.
Not always. Payouts over UPI are technically possible, but whether an exchange supports them varies. Check before you assume you can take money out the same way you put it in.
Most often the bank or UPI app restricts payments to crypto businesses. Daily limits and a temporarily deregistered handle are the other common causes. The exchange cannot override any of them.
No. UPI has no chargeback mechanism, so a completed payment is final. If money leaves your account but nothing credits, keep the transaction reference and contact support.
Generally no. It requires an Indian bank account, and non-resident support varies by bank. UPI has been piloted in a few countries through bilateral deals, but the sender side still usually needs an Indian account.
Use another Indian rupee rail such as IMPS or a bank transfer. These handle larger amounts and tend to be more reliable for crypto payments.
